Fiction and non-fiction
Proofreading includes:
  • Reading a manuscript to correct undeniable errors such as:
    • Misspelling and typos
    • Grammatical inconsistencies (tense and voice)
    • Subject-verb disagreement
    • Errors in word usage 
    • Incorrect hyphenation 
    • Punctuation
  • Correcting formatting inconsistencies (such as paragraph indentation)
  • Making a note of copy that is missing or redundant
Proofreading does not include:
  • Changing secondary spelling (enquire/inquire)
  • Improved word choice to enhance readability
  • Minor grammatical changes (such as as instead of when, or which instead of that )
  • Secondary punctuation (such as single quotes instead of double quotes, or vice-versa)

Proofreading includes:
  • Reading a document to correct undeniable spelling/grammatical errors
  • Correcting incorrect captions for charts, tables, and diagrams
  • Checking for inconsistencies in numbered and bulleted lists
  • Making a note of missing or redundant material

    • Improved word choice (to enhance readability)
