Fiction and non-fiction
Copy editing includes:
  • Proofreading
  • Correcting incorrect and/or inappropriate usage
  • Eliminating wordiness and redundancy
  • Correcting awkward syntax for better readability
  • Smoothing transitions to improve readability (at sentence level only)
  • Improving the flow of text to ensure a uniform style and tone
  • Tracking the continuity of  plot, setting, and character traits, and flagging discrepancies

Copy editing does not include:
  • Fact checking or independent research
  • Amending the structure of plot, character, or setting
  • Fixing discrepancies or suggesting alternatives
  • Improving word usage
  • Rewriting phrases or sentences   Top
